Der lustige Krieg [collection] : komische Operette in 3 Acten / von F. Zell und Richard Genée ; Musik von Johann Strauss. 188-

Arranged in eight groups: I. Vocal scores (65). II. Piano scores-Selections (1). III. Vocal parts (15). IV. Chorus parts (25). V. Librettos (46). VI. Promptbooks (14). VII. Dialogue parts (114). VIII. Lyrics (1). Production materials for Strauss's "Der lustige Krieg" and its English adaptation "The merry war." Vocal scores include a German edition by Cranz (Hamburg, 1881?) and two English editions (Boston: Ditson, c1881; White, Smith, c1882). The piano score is for the "Violetta polka sur des motifs de l'operette la guerre joyeuse," published by Cranz (Leipzig, n.d., pl. no. C. 5539), and bears the signature of Rosa M. Coates. Both the vocal and chorus parts are German manuscripts. The librettos, all in English, include editions by the Academy of Music Summer Garden Opera (1885), Kurtz (Baltimore, 1888), and a distinct edition lacking imprint information. Several of the librettos have been annotated as promptbooks. The collection also includes other English promptbooks, both typescript and manuscript, as well as two German manuscript copies, one bearing the stamp of Edward Uhlig, the other the stamp of "G. Ambey's Thalia Theatre Co." The dialogue parts represent thirteen sets, many of which are incomplete. One set is German manuscript, the others are in English (typed or handwritten). The lyrics are also handwritten in English. Several of the items in the collection represent distinct production versions of "The merry war": materials for the McCaull Version include a manuscript promptbook, three sets of typed dialogue parts, and five copies of the White, Smith vocal score; materials for the Ford Winston version include a promptbook and five sets of dialogue parts, all manuscript; and materials for the Academy of Music include two promptbooks and three published librettos, several of which bear the signature of Arthur Bell.
